I had the pleasure of hosting this year’s birthday traditional dinner my mom and my grandmother generally have on their birthdays, which both fall in the month of Janurary. Well since I had so much fun with Christmas, I thought it would be great to host their birthday. To top it off, for once they would get to just ENJOY!
It went great! I had fun making the curry. I tell you, this idea to do a new recipe a week, has been great for me. And having this blog to post about it has been motivation enough. I am turning into little miss betty crocker! lol
Not really THAT much, but seriously all this “liking” to cook is really odd for me. My husband is enjoying it. hehe
So anyways, I made our traditional curry dish. YUMMY!
What you will need:
- 2 lbs. ground beef
- 1 large onion (diced)
- 1 cup diced celery
- 3 beef bouillon cubes
- 3 cups water
- 1 slice lemon
- A little olive oil (maybe about 1 to 2 tbsp)
- 1/2 apple (chopped)
- 1 to 2 tbsp curry powder
- salt and pepper as you like
Cook beef then add ALL ingredients. No particular order. Simmer for about 2 hours. This meal it actually best if you cook up the day before and then reheat, as the flavor sinks in better.
Make up 1 1/2 cups rice or more if you would like.
In 10 separate bowls you will need:
- Coconut
- Hard Boiled Egg
- Dried Bacon (crumbled)
- Chutney
- Pickled Relish
- Sliced Bananas
- Pineapple Tidbits
- Nuts
- Candied Ginger (Finely chopped)
- Raisins
I should have gotten a picture after it was placed on the plate. But basically you put rice, then some meat on your plate. Then you add a little of all those 10 dishes on top. Mix it up, and OH what a wonderful flavor!
You’ve got to try this! It’s surprisingly simple (this was my first year making it myself)!
Of course we had dessert, but this was store bought cake with whipped cream and a strawberry on top for pizzazz.
Have a Tasty Friday!

It was wonderful to have you make it and host it this year. It tasted great too! Yummy. We should have that dish more then once a year.
. Maybe for your birthday.
. I will make it, of course, that time.
. Thanks for doing it for us!
I was happy to do it.
That might be a good idea! More then once a year is right, and my birthday hits right in the middle, that works perfect.
Love curry dishes! They are so easy to make, and you feel like a proper chef, huh.

hehe Ya, I felt like a chef. It was fun to make, and OH MY GOSH good! I’ve had it each year for my mother and grandmothers birthdays, and it’s always good. This year for some reason I was addicted to the leftovers. haha I do believe I want it for my birthday this year.
What a great birthday tradition. I don’t eat meat, but that can easily be subbed out for lentils and black beans.
And that cake, yum!
