Brushing Your Kids Teeth

Are you struggling with brushing your kids teeth?

My first born was a struggle let me tell you.  But I learned a few things.

Maybe these suggestions might help you:

Sing

Don’t we mothers (or daddys even) sing a lot to our children? If you’re like me, I prance around the house and sing a lot. I know, rather insane, but the kids seem to enjoy it. *wink*

While you get the toothbrush ready, sing about it to them. Make up a song as you go. I always ended up with “Brush Brush Brushing our teeth lalalalalala”  Original isn’t it?  haha

Make it a game

Example:  Here comes the toothbrush, can you open your mouth and catch it?  Oh good! How long can you let me brush one side of your mouth? etc etc.  Maybe not the funnest game, but make it exciting.  You can reward accordingly.  Maybe not with sweets, but with a special book, TV time etc.

Brush YOUR teeth

Be a good example and make sure you are brushing your teeth too. But not only that, do it in front of your child as much as you can. Get everyone involved.

I liked to have my husband brush his teeth in front of our oldest, as my son liked to emulate his daddy.

It shows them how it’s done, and shows them that it’s not only the kids that have to brush their teeth too.

Let them try

After or before you take control of the brush to give them a good scubbing, let them brush their own teeth from time to time.

(Both my boys like to do their own teeth, but we only let them after we’ve brushed them a bit. It’s good practice for when they are older and have to brush on their own)

Stick to it

Don’t give up. Keep trying. In time they will brush their teeth. If you keep a routine, and don’t back down in time they should comply.

I hope these help you in your quest to get your kids to brush their teeth.  One thing I have learned, if you get your oldest on board, your younger ones will follow suit. At least that is how it is in our family.

My youngest just about every time he enters the bathroom says “Tee tees” meaning he wants to brush his teeth.  He’s completely loving it, why? Because his big brother brushes his teeth each night after a bath too.  Yay for having an older child as an example. ;)

  1. “As the tree goes so go the branches” I love Raffi’s toothbrush song: “ch ch ch ch…”

  2. Wow, those 2 boys are the cutest boys brushing their teeth I have ever! seen!! :O) They look good at it. ;O)

  3. Loved reading about this in your home and your suggestions. Brushing teeth has always been “dramatic” in our home with two little girls. Two things come to mind. Actually three things: 1) I let both of my daughters brush my teeth with my toothbrush while I brushed their teeth with theirs. This was in those first few early tries of them using a big kid tooth brush. They thought it was the coolest thing ever to brush mommy’s teeth. And I got a toothbrush shoved up the nose a few times too. Beware… 2) You mentioned singing. We…well, I, totally sing during brushing. They brush and I sing…to the tune of Jingle Bells… “brush, brush, brush…brush, brush, brush,…brush your teeth all clean. We don’t like the cavity monster…brush your teeth all clean. Brush, brush, brush… brush, brush, brush…make them sparkly clean. We don’t like the cavity monster….make those teeth shiny clean!” I dance too. Lol! 3) For flossing…get the little toothpick like flossers. They come in a bag (you can get them in fun kid colors too) and are easy for little fingers to hold onto as they learn the importance of and the techniques for flossing.

There… now you know all my mommy brushing secrets. Ha! :)

    • Thank you for all your secrets. ;) I like the idea of having them brush your teeth, that is a GREAT idea! :) Great song too. hehe I think I’ve actually sung something very similar to that tune, it’s like the perfect tune for this.

I never even thought about flossing, I am glad you brought that up. THANK YOU! Going to try to bring that in soon. As least for my oldest. :)

As always, it’s a pleasure “seeing” you. :D

Your kids are SOOO cute! I love it when the older gets into something and the younger ones follow. That’s great when it’s something you want them to imitate. :D

  5. That’s how it should look like. But what dentists say you have to do it properly afterwards

  6. I love kids. Brushing teeth is an important way to get rid of plaque. You don’t however want to give them fluoridated toothpaste. My son developed severe fluorosis before he was two, so I defiantly don’t recommend it.
